A holiday close to the Dune du Pyla
The dune of Pilat is a gigantic dune of nearly 3 km long, more than 600 m wide and 110 m high which extends from north to south, between the Silver Coast and the Landes forest. His training dates back millions of years. The grains of sand, which result from the erosion of mountains, have been transported by rivers to the ocean. Arriving at the entrance to the Arcachon Basin, the accumulated sand encountered a big obstacle : a pine forest. The accumulation of sand at the entrance to the Arcachon basin being particularly important, a dune has gradually formed between the ocean and the natural barrier responsible for its birth, the forest.
Today, the highest dune in Europe is one of the most visited natural sites in France. It is rising to the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, another great natural jewel of the Hexagon. It belongs to the network of Grands Sites de France and can be visited freely throughout the year. Its access is completely free and outdoor sports like paragliding are practiced.
In addition to its history and its record size, the Pyla dune attracts for the wonderful landscapes visible from its summit. On one side, the Atlantic Ocean, Arcachon Bay, Banc d’Arguin and sandy beaches several kilometers long. On the other side, the green roof of the Landes forest.
After a photo shoot, you will enjoy walking on the dune and down with your friends or your children. After the visit, you can buy postcards and souvenirs in the shops at the foot of the dune, and have a drink before returning to the campsite.
